About 3,000 soldiers from the entire regiment participated in the JRTC rotation on 20 February. Additionally, soldiers from the 110th Military Police Company, 759th Military Police Battalion, trained and supported the 2nd IBCT while at Fort Polk.

Command Sgt. Maj. Steve Chandler, 2nd IBTC's senior enlisted leader, said the practical training at JRTC helped Soldiers learn and improve their skills.

"We are constantly training and developing, and JRTC provides us as a squadron with the opportunity to sharpen our skills so that we maintain our readiness."

JRTC tested the brigade through various capabilities. Soldiers used their skills to simulate training in a friendly country in conflict. The role-player interacts with soldiers in positive ways, such as local officials working with the 2nd IPCT to complete missions, as well as negative ways to learn how to react to various problems. Soldiers were tested against simulated enemies and worked with enemy forces to sabotage the platoon's mission.

The Massachusetts National Guard's 182nd Infantry Battalion and elements of the 1st Battalion, armed with Stryker armored vehicles, and the Pennsylvania National Guard's 112th Infantry will participate in the JRTC rotation.

Ciampolillo, 27th IPCT command sergeant major and resident of Glenville, N.Y. “Everything out there will sting you, sting you or give you a rash.

But those challenges are all part of the JRTC, designed to bend or break individual units and forces, exposing their weaknesses, Ciampolillo stressed. It will test everyone's ability to do the job and all players will leave JRTC better and smarter, he asserted.

"They will receive world-class training," he said. "Whatever they come to do, they'll do it at JRTC."

That training began in July, with troops flying to Fort Polk and shortly after entering a training area known as "the box." Once in the box, the game begins -- the operational tempo (ops tempo) spikes and the army confronts the enemy force (OPFOR).

Weapons systems, troops and vehicles are equipped with the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES). When fired with blank ammunition, MILES-equipped weapon systems send a laser signal toward MILES-equipped personnel and vehicles, triggering alarms indicating hits or near misses and simulating losses in the field.

Oct Duty: Tactical Broadening

So soldiers deployed to places like Iraq or Afghanistan, who are used to living on bases, will live longer on the battlefield, he explained.

"One thing that shocks you is the heat and humidity in Louisiana," says Westfall, of Valatie, N.Y. said. This is the first time they have been given camel bits and he described it as a "life saver for all of us".

Murphy and Edmonds recall that there were many heat-related deaths. It's hard to exercise for more than 15 or 20 minutes without finding a way to cool down, says Murphy.

"The humidity is something I've never experienced before or since," said Murphy, of East Greenbush, NY. First 96 hours there."

He added that after doing the exercises, he experienced air conditioning for the first time when he boarded the plane.

Soldiers say Louisiana's heat and humidity are worse than anything they've experienced during deployments to Kuwait and Iraq. Edmonds said the first week of the rotation is tough as the staff adjusts to the new environment, advising them to plan breaks and use teammates to scrimmage.

"Let's take care of each other," he said. "Dry heat abroad. Here is wet heat. It penetrates you. You burn quickly. It's hot, but there's no humidity. The humidity kills you. You feel like you can't breathe."
