The 9mm XD Service Pistol is an excellent example of a modern combat pistol. It is well built with excellent accuracy and an easy to learn trigger. Clear and fast views that can be used in all lighting conditions. When you hold this gun and shoot it, you quickly understand why so many people are happy owners.
If you need a full size 9mm handgun for home defense or law enforcement, this is the logo to look for.
With a 4" barrel and 1.2" width, the Service Model XD is perfectly sized for any type of uniformed law enforcement use. For example, I know of a private security agency in Florida that offers the service model 9mm XD. The agency is responsible for high-risk operations, including the security of nuclear facilities. His officers have responded to many calls of violence. Each time, the XD service model helped these officers successfully resolve hazardous situations.
Smaller guns are rougher to shoot than larger guns of the same caliber. Larger guns tend to absorb more recoil, have more surface area to grip and produce less muzzle blast. They do all this while improving the potential accuracy of shots due to the greater remote distance. All of these reasons make the Service Model XD an excellent choice for a nightstand-stored home defense weapon. Since the XD has an accessory rail, you can also add a white light or an additional targeting laser.

All that being said, I believe the Service Model XD makes a great civilian concealed carry pistol. A 4" barrel is not much more difficult than a 0.5" to 1" shorter barrel, the barrel length of most "compact" carry pistols. Likewise, the extra girth of the gun can easily be handled by a quality holster .
The benefits of carrying the Service Model 9mm are numerous. Capacity is one of the most obvious. One magazine for this gun holds 16 rounds of felon ammunition. Assuming you carry one in the chamber, 17 shots before reloading. That may seem like a lot compared to a small gun, but as my wife likes to say, "Nobody ever complained about too much ammo."
Carrying the Service Model XD offers the same benefits you would if you were carrying it as a home defense weapon: a full grip, highly visible sights, moderate recoil and an accessory rail.
The service model XD is well hidden under a jacket. For an EDC gun, it offers all the benefits of a larger gun, such as recoil and full grip.

If you, like many of your fellow Americans, are on a tight budget, the XD service model makes more sense. Springfield Armory has you covered and is now offering this pistol at an incredibly affordable MSRP of $339. For less than the cost of many used firearms, you can own a new service model XD with a lifetime warranty.
Ideal for home defense and concealed carry, you can forgo buying multiple guns and rely on the proven XD platform. This leaves plenty of cushion in the monthly budget for family food and school clothes.
When I test guns, I fire hundreds—sometimes thousands—of rounds through them, looking for any flaws I can find. I work with all types of cartridges and bullet styles: +P, standard pressure, JHP, FMJ, polymer tip. This was the case with the 4” XD.
In my case, I've shot a lot of XD service pistols over the past two decades. I had a pretty good idea of what to expect when I went to the range. So I had high hopes. XD delivered. With 760 rounds through the gun I had no problems. All types of ammo perform flawlessly in this gun.

Accuracy was excellent out to 25 yards. Most guns can perform better than the person pulling the trigger, and that seemed to be the case with my test gun. As I went about my business, the gun put the rounds where they were supposed to be.
Premium self-defense loads like the Federal HST 147-gr. JHP, Hornady Critical Duty 135-gr. Flexlock and Speer Gold Dot 124-gm. JHP +P performed beyond all expectations. All powered and fired with 100% reliability and turned into great groups.
One of the complaints some shooters voice about modern striker-fired pistols is that the triggers are not smooth. I agree that streaker pistols have a different feel than a classic double action revolver, but I don't agree that they are bad. In fact, the XD has one of the best triggers in its class. At a moderate pull, the trigger has a relatively short pull with constant weight until it breaks. I love the way I feel.
The full-size grip allows the shooter to better control the pistol throughout the shooting process. As a side benefit, the larger handles allow for larger capacity refills.

A bigger concern for some people is the feel of the trigger safety. Like many striker-fired pistols, the XD uses a rotating centerpiece on the trigger face to prevent accidental firing. Springfield Armory uses a trigger guard to improve comfort during long range sessions. I found the convenience of the safe to be great.

Another design feature of the XD that stands out to me is the shape of the rear bar under the slide. This upper part of the frame is significantly cut inwards. While this could be done specifically to reliably engage the grip safety, I appreciate it because it allows me to put just the right amount of finger on the trigger every time I draw the gun.
Springfield Armory offers many excellent pistols. From custom 1911 pistols costing thousands to modern XD-M and Hellcat polymer pistols, the company offers plenty of options for all budgets.

In all weather conditions, the Springfield XD pistol is a proven performer that provides full value at a reasonable price.
At the end of the day, though, the original XD line remains reliable and affordable. For a defensive device, the XD seems to check all the boxes, keeping the suggested retail price to just $339. For new pistols, it's hard to find a quality defensive pistol for under $350 – especially one with the XD's track record.
For my money, the XD Service 4” 9mm pistol is one of the best self defense deals on the market today.
